Rise in London crime rate
A recent statistics Canada survey found the volume of severe crimes in London to be rising, in contrast to the national rate dropping. The crime severity index, which gives higher weight to more serious crimes showed reported crimes fell by about 4% nationally, but rose more than 3% in the wider London area, which includes London, St. Thomas, Middlesex and Strathroy. Last year the city saw a significant increase in reports of sexual assault and street-level robberies. Also, while youth crime has steadily dropped, violent crimes committed by minors have risen %10 over the past 10 years. Police Chief Murray Faulkner believes that Many of these crimes are related to societal issues, like substance abuse and the state of the economy.
